Frequently Asked Questions
SOLID WASTE
Q:

What happens to the solid waste when it is pulled from trash cans around campus and inside buildings?

A:All solid waste is collected in dark plastic bags and taken to a central compactor.  One is located near Whitehead Hall and another is located behind the Bloomberg building.  This compactor is hauled by Waste Management to the Baltimore Refuse Energy System Company (BRESCO), where the trash is incinerated.

Q:

How much trash does the Homewood campus generate annually?

A:

Nearly 1,400 tons of trash is generated by the Homewood campus annually.

Q:

How can I help reduce the amount of trash generated?

A:The best way to bring down the amount of solid waste generated on campus is to find ways to reduce consumption on the individual level. Refill a plastic coffee cup every morning instead of using paper cups, take a reusable bag with you to the grocery store, or put rechargeable batteries in your electronics. These are just a few simple ways you can have a positive impact on our campus and the environment.
