The Johns Hopkins Sustainability Initiative (JHSI) was launched in the summer of 2006 as a natural outgrowth of several successful greening programs on campus, including the recycling program, the Hopkins "Greening" initiative, and the sustainable dining efforts. The JHSI was formed to consolidate these efforts and pursue three important goals:
- Develop and facilitate projects that reduce the negative environmental impacts of the University, particularly in ways that make us better stewards of energy and our natural resources;
- Integrate the skills, experience, and creativity of our students and faculty into each project to the greatest extent possible; and
- Promote sustainability through education and outreach activities, collaboration between school divisions, and involvement in the larger Baltimore community.
The recycling program is an essential part of the overall sustainability focus of Johns Hopkins. As we grow the Sustainability Initiative, we plan to increase the scope of the recycling program to undertake new measures that make Hopkins a truely sustainable community. In the future, look for the recycling program to expand to more sustainability features, such as: Collection of food wastes for composting; Expansion of recycling to include construction wastes; Education and outreach activities; Facilitation of competition between residence halls; Expanded training of custodial and operations staff.
While we maintinan a bold sustainable vision for Johns Hopkins, we recognize that we need the help and cooperation of the entire community to make this vision a reality.
